Toil

September 18, 2022

Toil Definition

To work extremely hard or incessantly. to work hard and long. drudgery, grind, labor, travail, and work. activity involving effort or exertion, toil implies prolonged and fatiguing labor.

What does the Bible say?

Ecclesiastes 2:24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil(If it’s your anointing it won’t feel like work).

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 I have concluded that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to enjoy themselves as long as they live, and also that everyone should eat and drink, and find enjoyment in all his toil, for these things are a gift from God.

Toil is meant to be an enjoyment, not a life sucking job that robs your soul!

I have been there and perhaps that is a sign that it is time to move on, amen!

Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

Note: If you love what you do then this will come out automatically

Proverbs 16:3 Entrust your work to the Lord, and your planning will succeed.

Proverbs 12:11-12 The one who works his field will have plenty of food, but whoever chases daydreams lacks wisdom. The wicked person desires a stronghold, but the righteous root endures.

Reminders

Proverbs 18:9-10 The one who is slack in his work is a brother to one who destroys. The name of the Lord is like a strong tower; the righteous person runs to it and is set safely on high.

Romans 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

2 Chronicles 15:7 But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

We need rest

Psalm 127:2 It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Proverbs 23:4-5 Don’t exhaust yourself acquiring wealth; be smart enough to stop. When you fix your gaze on it, it’s gone, for it sprouts wings for itself and flies to the sky like an eagle.

Bible Examples

Genesis 3:17-19 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 2:15 15 So the Lord God took the man [He had made] and settled him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

Note: Even this “cultivation” that Adam was to do, wasn’t meant to take him 60 hours a week! And it wasn’t meant to be painful. It wasn’t until after the sin that roses developed thorns!

Note: In Genesis God brought the animals to Adam not the other way around! No toil for Adam! This was before the fall, before the curse.

Genesis 5:28-31 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” (talking about Jesus)

Now we have been redeemed from the curse, what curse? Any curse!

Which means even the curse of painful toil! We should not have painful toil or toil that causes a heavy burden. In fact we know the OT is a  shadow of what is to come in the NT.

Abraham is a perfect example of the grace that was upon his life and are we not in a better covenant? Look at this passage.

Genesis 12:14 through Genesis 13:2

14 And when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s princes (officials) also saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken [for the purpose of marriage] into Pharaoh’s house (harem). 16 Therefore Pharaoh treated Abram well for her sake; he acquired sheep, oxen, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.

17 But the Lord punished Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her and go!” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him on his way, with his wife and all that he had.

Gen. 13

1 So Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot [his nephew] with him, into the Negev (the South country of Judah).

2 Now Abram was extremely rich in livestock and in silver and in gold.

Did you guys notice anything? Did you see what happened? There was a drought in the land and Abram went into Egypt with nothing but a few possessions. The economy at that time was in a drought but Abram went into a drought and came out rich, not rich but actually extremely rich.

Important thing to note here is that Abram didn’t even toil!!! This is grace!  Not only is this grace but this is the OT how much better is the NT! But we have to believe!!!

But if we only have faith for 60 hours toil, God will honor that as well! Don’t you see it is up to us!!!

In the story of the Centurion remember?

MATTHEW 8:5-10

5 As Jesus went into Capernaum, a centurion came up to Him, begging Him [for help], 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, with intense and terrible, tormenting pain.” 7 Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion replied to Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man subject to authority [of a higher rank], with soldiers subject to me; and I say to one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those who were following Him, “I tell you truthfully, I have not found such great faith [as this] with anyone in Israel.

How many of you here got it? If you get it you’ll know because you get this infilling in the inside of you, the light bulb will go off, amen!

Your life is up to  you. Even Jesus was willing to walk to the Centurions house but he said no just speak the word and my servant will be healed! It was up to the Centurion’s faith just like your life is up to your faith cmon!

I truly love you all,
