Woman

Growing up as children years ago, whenever your Mom called your name, you responded with “Yes Mother”, “Yes Momma” or “yes”, “yes Ma’am”. I will tell you what you dont ever respond with and that is with “what” or “Woman”. And I tell ya it doesn’t matter if you’re 3 years old or 83 you never respond to your mom with a “what” or “woman what is it that you want”. Lol. Why? Because there was discipline involved and respect. In other words you would get a whoopin.

John 2:4 [AMP]

4Jesus said to her, “[Dear] woman, what is that to you and to Me? My time [to act and to be revealed] has not yet come.”

Mary, who I’m sure by now is excited about her son and there some speculation that Mary wanted Jesus to turn the water into wine perhaps because she’s seen it before done at home! But that’s pure speculation. Nonetheless Mary did not fully know what she was asking here by exposing her son in this way to perform a miracle. To Mary it is just a wonderful miracle but Jesus perhaps wasn’t too eager to get this mission started. For he knew once he started this miracle openly it would end 3 yrs later with him on the cross. So while Mom was like yes do this little miracle! And Jesus is like really mom like now of all times now? In fact he didn’t even call her mom he said woman.

Matthew 12:46-50 [AMP]

46 While He was still talking to the crowds, it happened that His mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to Him. 47 Someone said to Him, “Look! Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside asking to speak to You.” 48 But Jesus replied to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples [and all His other followers], He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven [by believing in Me, and following Me] is My brother and sister and mother.”

At this point Jesus is doing what he is supposed to do and he’s telling people about the word and the Father and his family at this point, not knowing the full mission he has in front of him, are like ok Jesus calm down chill come back home and be with your family so we can chill out and commune. But Jesus uses this as a lesson to teach that whoever does the will of the Father is a brother, a sister, a mother.

John 19:26

So Jesus is on the cross now, naked, ashamed, beaten and bleeding.

26 So Jesus, seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved (esteemed) standing near, said to His mother, “[Dear] woman, look, [here is] your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple (John), “Look! [here is] your mother [protect and provide for her]!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

Again in english this looks pretty harsh but the word woman can also be translated as “ma’am” or “Lady”. But here again Jesus is consistent in calling his Mother, “Woman”.

Jesus is making arrangements for John to take care of his mother.

Conclusion

So although Jesus constantly calls his mother “woman” I dont think it is out of disrespect but the way the English language translates the Greek and Aramaic. It is arguably closer to a “ Ma’am” or “Lady” but even still as a Mom you want your children to call you Mom not Lady.

But looking at the big picture we can see that Jesus could not die as the son of Mary. Jesus had to die as her Savior!

Food for thought

And what about the humbleness that often gets overlooked? It took for the Word to create and fashion  Mary and then to be born “through” Mary’s womb as a baby!

I truly love you all,
